The Early Years - Sandcastles and Dreams of Beautiful Smiles

Some children dream of living in a castle as a Prince or Princess, some want to be firemen or tv stars when they grow up. I was just Karen Chu back then...the dentist Dr Karen Chu was just a glimmer of a far off dream. But even then I knew that smiles were something magical and special. As far back as I can remember I wanted to help people. And, I wanted to help them smile.

That was considered a little strange back then. Dental techniques were not nearly as advanced as today. I am thrilled that now we are seeing more and more technology and research eliminating the need for pain or trauma in maintaining beautiful and healthy teeth. (The only thing better than my being able to make my life's work providing beautiful smiles -- would be something that guarantees great smiles without the need for any care).

But, even then I saw the difference that feeling free to smile made for my family and friends. I recognized it as a treasure-- AND a key that could unlock doors for some.... or shut out all kind of good things and opportunities for the others. Those kids who were too embarrassed by their teeth to open their mouths seemed to lose on almost every great part of childhood.

So my sandcastles were dentists offices that became palaces of smiles. And today. I practice my dream in real dentist offices here in Phoenix.

What were your childhood dreams? How do they connect in some small way to what you do now as adults?

Have A Happy And Safe Independence Day

Happy 4th of July!

Yesterday, Today and Some Tips - to keep outside celebrating safe for the kids....

'After voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this decision, which had been prepared by a Committee of Five, with Thomas Jefferson as its principal author. Congress debated and revised the wording of the Declaration, finally approving it on July 4. A day earlier,John Adams had written to his wife Abigail:
The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.
Adams's prediction was off by two days. From the outset, Americans celebrated independence on July 4, the date shown on the much-publicized Declaration of Independence, rather than on July 2, the date the resolution of independence was approved in a closed session of Congress. ' From Wikipedia

Today, families frequently celebrate Independence Day by hosting or attending a picnic or barbecue making the celebration of our country also a celebration of our family, church and/or community.

It is a day to feel FREE and to share that feeling with others. Here in Phoenix, the 4th is also a time of high temperatures, making water a must have part of any outdoors celebration!

Some Safety Points To Keep In Mind In the Phoenix Heat This Independence Day

  •  As the kids run around and play waiting for the barbeque to be ready, make sure they stop for a quick drink of water. Smaller amounts frequently will keep their bodies more evenly hydrated and their tummies happier than gulping down a huge amount after getting over heated and dehydrated.

  • If the day is going to be outside more than inside, keep an eye out for how much heavy eats they eat while still in the heat. Making sure they have some lighter fruit and water filled veggies before the burgers will help their bodies strike a balance between food, exertion and heat.

  • If the party is by the pool, make sure that the kids take a shower or bath in fresh water once they get back inside. Chlorine and sun heated skin can be irritating.

Finally, when they heat fades and the sparklers come out.... remind the kids to hold them far away from their bodies...especially their mouths!

Have the happiest and safest of Independence Days!
